Location Information for the HP Galway Chess Congress 2008

The HP Galway Chess Congress 2008, sponsored by Hewlett Packard Galway is being held from Oct 3rd-5th at the Salthill Hotel on the promenade in Salthill in Galway. Note that the hotel is just after adding a major extension so the sign on the front is quite small now - click on this photo to get the larger image:

Location

The Salthill Hotel is on the west side of Galway on the prom in Salthill. See the map on ICU website for the exact location! Salthill is a busy tourist area during the summer and has lots of B&Bs and several hotels close by.

If you are travelling by car from Dublin or Limerick, you'll be coming in on a dual-carriageway, past the Quality Hotel in Oranmore. About 1.8 miles from Quality Hotel, you reach another roundabout (called the "Martin" roundabout after one of the Galway tribes!). At that roundabout, you'll see a sign for Galway City East (first exit) and Galway City West (second exist). At this point, you can decide to follow the main route on the map above by staying on the dual carriageway for Galway City West and following the signs for Salthill (not Lower Salthill) or else take the town centre route on the map above by taking the R336 (Galway City East). Both routes will get you to Salthill in about the same time.

Please leave about 30 minutes to get from this point to the Salthill Hotel. In Galway, most of the factories stop work at 1pm on a Friday so the worst traffic is around 1pm. At that point, it may be easier to go the town centre route.

Galway Airport

The nearest airport is about 8 miles from the hotel. The Galway Chess Club can arrange to pick you up from the airport and bring you to the tournament hotel.
