Blitzes

The Galway Chess club has had a fairly recent tradition of running several blitzes each year, sometimes as often as once a month.

A chess blitz is a small tournament which is run over about 2 hours on one night with between 5 and 7 rounds. For each round, players are limited to a small amount of time (usually 10 minutes) each for all of their moves. If you run out of time, you lose. This tends to concentrate the mind!

Sometimes we handicap the better players by giving them less time, in the hope that this will even up the struggle. This tends to be a bit more stressful for the higher ranked player who can have as little as 3 minutes for all of their moves.
